Old walls and the base of trees are good places to look for mosses, especially in winter when most other foliage has died away. They grow in either dense cushions or as sprawling carpets. Mosses don't produce flowers. Instead they produce microscopic spores. Because mosses are so small they require a powerful hand lens to accurately identify them.
