Bird  Wryneck

Latin name: Jynx torquilla

Size: Approx 18cm

Distribution:
Rare. Usually seen on the south and east coasts.

Months seen: May to September. The wryneck winters in Africa

Habitat: Pine forests and coastal sites. Sometimes seen in gardens in August and September.

Food: As with other woodpeckers it feeds on ants

Special features: The back and wings of the wryneck are mottled grey and brown, forming a perfect camouflage when resting on tree branches. There is a dark line running through each eye and down the neck. The breast and neck is off white with brown spots and bars
