Latin name: Oenanthe oenanthe
Size: Approximately 15cms
Distribution: Found throughout the U.K.
Months seen: March to Otober. Winters in Africa
Food: Insects
Habitat: Open countryside, especially farmland, moors and coastal areas.
Special features: When the wheatear flies you immediately notice its
white rump which gives this bird its name. Wheatear is a corruption of the words
'white' and 'rear'.
Other prominent features are the dark eye stripe, dark wing patches, long legs
and short tail. The tail feathers have black ends.
The males have a more grey coloured back while the females are more brown.
Wheatears in the north of the U.K. tend to be more buff coloured on the
underparts, while wheatears in the south tend to be more grey-white.
