Latin name: Apus apus
Size: Wingspan approximately 40cm.
Distribution: Found in most parts of the UK.
Months seen: May to August
Habitat: Can be seen flying almost anywhere. They breed in towns and
villages.
Food: Insects which they catch in flight
Special features: The photo above shows the typical view most people
get of a swift as it darts across the sky. A black boomerang-shaped silhouette.
With it's long pointed wings the swift lives up to its name, being extremely
agile and fast in flight. They are rarely seen on the ground, and they never
perch on wires like swallows and martins. It's believed swifts even sleep on the
wing.
The plumage of the swift is a uniform grey-brown with a white patch around the
throat.
Swifts spend the winter months in Africa.
