Latin name: Hyles livornica
Size: Wingspan up to 90mms
Distribution: A migrant spotted in many parts of the UK.
Months seen: May to October
Food: Nectar
Habitat: Parks and gardens
Special features: The Striped Hawk-Moth is a night flying species which
can sometimes be found feeding on the nectar of petunia and valerian.
The thorax of the Striped Hawk-Moth has four distinctive white stripes running lengthways, and
the antennae have white tips. There is a white dorsal stripe running along the abdomen, and
each of the underwings feature a bright red patch.
The green striped caterpillars feed on willow-herbs, bedstraws,
fuchsia and grape vine.
