Beechwood Sickener Fungi
Scientific name: Russula mairei
Size: The cap is approx. 6cm in diameter
Distribution: Found throughout the U.K.
Months seen: September to November
Habitat: Woodland, especially below beech trees
Special features: The beechwood sickener gets its name from the after effect if you try to eat one! It causes severe stomach upsets and abdominal pains. The cap is pink to red, normally rounded when young, but growing flatter as it gets old. The stem and gills are pure white.
