Latin name: Sympetrum sanguineum
Size: Wingspan approx 55mm.
Distribution: Found throughout most of England parts of Wales, Northern
Ireland and southern Scotland.
Months seen: June to October.
Habitat: Ponds, lakes, ditches and still water, especially in wooded
areas.
Food: Flying insects.
Special features: The male ruddy darter has a bright red abdomen which
has a narrow (waisted) section in the middle. The wings are also red at the
shoulders. The female is a golden brown colour. The legs of both the male and
female are black.
