Pine Hawkmoths
Scientific name: Hyloicus pinastri Size: Wingspan up to 80mm Distribution: Found in most counties of England from the south coast up to Yorkshire. Months seen: May to August Food: Nectar. The larvae feed on Scots Pine and Spruce needles. Habitat: Woods, conifer plantations, parks and gardens. Special features: Pine Hawkmoths have grey-brown coloured wings with black streaks, and a dotted margin on the trailing edge. The abdomen features black bands. They fly by night, feeding on honeysuckle, and readily come to light. The caterpillars are green with thee white stripes along the body from head to tail. At the tail end they have a red horn with a black tip. As the caterpillars mature they develop a brown dorsal stripe running from head to tail.
