Latin name: Nyctalus noctula
Size: Wingspan approximately 35 to 45cms. Head and body around 7cms.
Distribution: Found throughout the UK.
Months seen: April to October.
Food: Beetles (chafers and dung beetles), moths, flies and midges.
Habitat: Roosts in trees. Usually seen flying at tree top level.
Echolocation Frequency: 20 - 25 kHz
Special features: A large bat. Sandy coloured short, smooth, dense fur. The skin colour is dark brown.
Noctule bats have rounded ears with a flat mushroom shaped tragus.
The scent and oil glands on the sides of the face are quite chubby, giving it
the appearance (see photo) of an unlucky boxer.
