Kestrels

July is a good time to watch young kestrels on the wing.  Many will have just left the nest and are developing their impressive hunting skills.  Kestrels have incredibly good eyesight.  They can spot a potential meal, like a mouse, while hovering at 200 feet above the ground.

You can see kestrels while traveling on almost any motorway in Britain.  They're our commonest bird of prey, and frequently hunt over motorway verges.  Their ability to hover in one position, maintaining their height with rapid beats of their wings, is quite extraordinary.  In fact if you see a bird hovering in a fixed position in the sky it's almost certain to be a kestrel.
