Scientific name: Noctua orbona
Size: Wingspan up to 44mm
Distribution: Scarce, but found in parts of Britain (mainly southern and central England)
Months seen: Between June and September
Habitat: Woodlands, parks, hedgerows and gardens
Food: Nectar. The caterpillars feed on low growing vegetation
Special features: Lunar Yellow Underwings are nocturnal moths which have now become quite scarce. They can be distinguished from the more common Large Yellow Underwing by the straighter forewings which also have a large black mark on the leading edge.
