Herring Gulls
Scientific name: Larus argentatus
Size: Approx 55cm
Distribution: Found throughout the UK
Months seen: All year round
Habitat: Coastal areas, farmland, resevoirs and landfill/waste sites
Food: Anything, omnivorous
Special features: Herring gulls are mostly brown as young birds, but get progressively grey as they mature. The adult birds are all white with a light grey band all across the upper surfaces of the wings and back. There are some black patches at the wing tips. The legs are pink and the beak is yellow, with an orange-red spot on the lower half, near the tip.
