Latin name: Trichiosoma tibiale
Size: Approximately 20mms
Distribution: Found throughout the UK, especially in the south.
Months seen: April to June
Food: The larvae feed on hawthorn.
Habitat: Scrubby areas where the foodplant grows.
Special features: Very hairy sawfly. The hair colour can vary from pale to dark
brown. The front edges of the wings, and the legs, are orange-red in colour.
 The
larva spins a tough cocoon, and the adult sawfly has to cut the top
off, from inside to emerge.
