Latin name: Plecotus austriacus
Size: Wingspan up to 300mm
Distribution: Rare. Found mainly in central and southern England.
Months seen: April to October.
Echolocation Frequency: 40 - 45 kHz
Habitat: Normally roosts in old trees and buildings.
Food: Moths, flies gnats and midges.
Special features: The grey long-eared bat can be difficult to
distinguish from the brown long-eared bat.
It is slightly larger although this can vary a lot, as can the colour of the
fur. When you sit the two species side by side you notice that the thumbs and feet of
the grey long-eared are half the size of the brown long-eared. See photo
