Latin name: Regulus ignicapillus

Size: Approx 9cm long with a wingspan of around 15cm.

Distribution: Seen mainly in the south and east of the UK.

Months seen: All year round.

Habitat: Bushes and scrubby woodland. Mainly coniferous.

Food: Small insects.

Special features: The firecrest has bright green plumage on the back and white plumage on the underparts. The shoulders also have an orange tinge. It's name comes from the bright orange stripe on the top of its head which is bordered by two black stripes. It has a short black stripe through the eye with a broad white eyebrow stripe above. It vies with the Goldcrest for the title of the smallest bird in the UK.

Although they do breed here in the UK (in low numbers) Firecrests are frequently seen as passage migrants, mainly on east and south coasts.
