Scientific name: Pelophylax esculentus (formerly Rana esculenta)
Size: Up to 12cm
Distribution: Found mostly in the southern counties of England
Months seen: March to October. Hibernates through the winter, often underwater
Habitat: Mostly found in water (even out of the breeding season)
Food: Small invertebrates
Special features: Edible frogs are usually green or brown coloured with dark grey-black spots. There is a pale green or yellow stripe running down the centre of the back from the nose to the tip of the spine. It doesn't have the brown patch behind the eyes which our native frogs have. When croaking these frogs inflate two greyish-white coloured vocal sacs from each side of their throat.
