Latin name: Leptinotarsa decemlineata

Size: Approximately 12mms long

Distribution: Rarely found in the U.K.

Months seen: April to September

Food: Potato plant leaves.

Habitat: Farmland and vegetable gardens.

Special features: The Colorado beetle has a brown head with black markings. The wing casings are yellow with black stripes.

The larvae of this beetle are bright pink with black heads.

The Colorado Beetle was discovered in the Rocky Mountains in 1823, where it feeds on 'Buffalo burr', a plant belonging to the same family as the potato. The beetle was probably brought to Europe in the early 1900's on cargo ships.

Although it can now be found in many parts of Europe, the Colorado beetle is not currently found in the U.K. If you spot one you should catch it and notify the police as soon as possible. It is a serious pest of potato plants and other crops.
