Latin name: Phylloscopus collybita
Size: Approximately 11 to 12cms.
Distribution: Found in most parts of the UK, although in Scotland it is more
frequently seen in the south.
Months seen: March to October.
Food: Small insects
Habitat: Woodlands and gardens. Often near water.
Special features: The chiffchaff is one of the first songbirds to arrive
back to Britain after its winter migration to Mediterranean areas.
The name is derived from its unmistakeable song whih sounds something like a
repetative "chiff chop chip chaff". The song is the easiest way to
distinguish the chiffchaff from the willow warbler. The willow warbler sounds
something like "Hoo-it".
