Mammal  Brown Rat

Latin Name: Rattus norvegicus

Size: Head and body 25cms long, tail is a further 20cms long

Distribution: Found throughout the UK

Months seen: All year round

Habitat: Around buildings, rivers, canals, farms, hedgerows and sewers.

Food: Eats anything!

Special features: The brown rat is a native of Central Asia. It is believed they arrived in Britain by boat from Russia in the 1700's.

They have coarse fur and a thick scaly tail. Brown rats can swim well, and are often seen near water.

They usually live in underground burrows. The entrance hole is around 4cms in diameter. Their life expectancy is approximately 18 months.
