Scientific name: Sympetrum danae
Size: Body length approx 35mm. Wingspan approx 50mm
Distribution: Found throughout most of the UK except parts of central, southern and eastern England
Months seen: July to October
Habitat: Shallow, boggy ponds with plenty of vegetation
Food: Flying invertebrates
Special features: Mature male Black Darters are almost completely black, and have a narrow section halfway along their abdomen.
The females and juvenile males have a yellow body with just a few black markings.
