Beefsteak Fungi
Scientific name: Fistulina hepatica
Size: Can grow to around 20cm in diameter
Distribution: Found throughout the U.K.
Months seen: August to November
Habitat: Normally appears on the trunks of oak trees, close to the ground
Special features: Also known as the 'Oak Tongue', the beefsteak fungus is literally shaped like a tongue or liver. It is usually bright red when it first appears, gradually turning brown with age.
The presence of tannic acid in the fungus tends to stain the wood inside the tree trunk a rich dark brown. This stained wood is highly prized by furniture makers.
