Look for Avocets in the south and south west of England in winter when the population is swelled by
overwintering birds.

Recurvirostra avosetta
Size: Approximately 45cms.
Distribution: Found along the south and east coasts of
England.
Months seen: All year round. The resident population is
swelled in January and February with wintering birds
Habitat: Saltwater lagoons, estuaries and coastal areas
Food: Worms and shrimps
Lifespan: Up to 24 years
Special features: An elegant wading bird. The plumage is
mostly white with black markings on its tail, back, wing tips, top
of head and back of neck. The beak is black and curves upwards.
The long legs are grey-blue in colour.
