Fish  Tench

Latin name: Tinca tinca

Size: Up to 60cms long

Distribution: Found in many parts of the U.K. but more common in the south.

Months seen: All year round

Food: Insects, worms, snails and some plants.

Habitat: Slow-flowing rivers and oxbow lakes

Special features: A sturdy fish with a brown-green back, golden sides and a cream coloured belly. It has small eyes and two barbels (whiskers) at the corners of its mouth.

The males can be distinguished from the females by their longer pelvic fins.

This fish is usually found on the bottom of rivers where it feeds on insects. It can tolerate water with very low oxygen levels.
