Latin name: Lipophrys pholis
Size: Grows to a length of around 15cms.
Distribution: Found all round the UK coast.
Months seen: All year round.
Habitat: Rocky coastlines and sandy shores.
Food: Algae, small fish, barnacles and mussels.
Special features: The shanny has a blunt face and a dorsal fin runningthe
length of its back. It has eyes on the top of its head, giving it excellent
vision.
It can vary its body colour from dark grey to match a rocky background to
olive-green to match seaweeds. The skin is smooth and slimy and lacks
scales.
