Latin name: Gerris lacustris

Size: Body length approximately 15mms.

Distribution: Found throughout the UK.

Months seen: April to October.

Food: Insects.

Habitat: Still and slow moving ponds.

Special features: Usually seen skating over the surface of ponds. It has tiny hairs on its feet which repel water and allow it to walk on the surface film.

It uses it's middle pair of legs to propel itself forwards, and its rear pair of legs to steer left or right. The front pair of legs are used to grasp other insects which fall into the water.
