Noon Fly
Latin name: Mesembrina meridiana
Size: Approx 10mm long
Distribution: Found throughout the UK.
Months seen: March to October
Habitat: Gardens and flowery places.
Food: Nectar. The larvae feed on cow dung.
Special features: Noon flies have a distinctive orange-brown patch on
the wings where they meet the body. It's not always as bright as the example
above - sometimes it's more yellow-brown.
There is also a pale coloured
patch on the face between the reddish-brown eyes. The feet are orange-brown.
Noon flies are usually seen sunbathing on trees, fences and walls in bright
sunlight. They're harmless to humans.
