Latin name: Aurelia aurita
Size: Up to 40cms in diameter.
Distribution: Found around most of the UK coast.
Months seen: All year round.
Food: Plankton and small fish.
Habitat: Usually seen in bays and estuaries from April to September when they congregate to breed.
Special features: The dish-shaped top, known as the exumbrellar, features four violet coloured crescent or moon shapes. Hence the name. The mouth is underneath at the end of a short tube.
Although they often cause alarm to holidaymakers, this species of jellyfish is quite harmless as their sting cannot penetrate human skin.
