Latin name: Aster novi-belgii
Size: The stems grow to around 80cms high.
Distribution: Found throughout the UK.
Flowering months: August to late October.
Habitat: Often found on damp ground or close to streams.
Special features: Michaelmas daisies were originally introduced to Britain from North America in the early 1700's. Although they are not native, they survive extremely well.
They continue blooming until autumn and provide late-flying butterflies such as peacocks and small tortoiseshells with a good source of nectar. The lilac flowers have bright yellow
centres.
Did You Know
Michaelmas means Michael's Mass. The flowers traditionally bloom on September 29th which is 'The Feast of Saint Michael'. Saint Michael was the warrior saint of all angels.
