Photographing Insects
One of the biggest problems of shooting
close ups of insects is the limited depth of field. As the magnification goes up
so the depth of field decreases. If light is limited then the
area in focus is usually just a few millimetre at best and using a smaller
aperture won't help. With insects, especially ones with long bodies, like grasshoppers and
dragonflies this can be a problem. You
can see in the photo above how the grasshoppers head and front legs are in
focus, but the rest of its body is blurred.
The easiest way to overcome this is to
photograph the insect side on. As you can see in this second photo, with the
insect parallel to the front of your camera you can get most of the body in focus
too.
