Crab  Hermit Crabs

Hermit Crab - Photo © Copyright 2001 Gary Bradley Photo: G. Bradley

Latin name: Pagurus bernhardus

Size: Hermit crabs can grow up to 100mms. As they grow, they discard their shell and find a larger one.

Distribution: Found throughout the UK.

Months seen: All year round.

Habitat: Most beaches.

Food: Being scavengers, they feed on almost anything from fish to vegetation.

Special features: The hermit crab does not have a hard outer shell covering its body, so to compensate for this lack of protection, it lives inside the shell of another marine creature, usually a whelk. The one above has made its home inside a tower shell.

To move around, they walk on their four front legs, dragging their shell behind them.
