Latin name: Orchis morio
Size: Grows to a height of around 30cms.
Distribution: Found in central and southern England. Rare in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Flowering months: May to June.
Habitat: Meadows, especially on chalky soils.
Special features: Sometimes called "green-veined orchid" This plant looks very similar to the early purple orchid (Orchis mascula), except the leaves of the green-winged orchid have no spots or blotches.
Close up the flower showing its three-lobed lip.
Each flower has a long spur at the back which holds the nectar to attract insects.
