Spotted Cranefly
Latin name: Nephrotoma appendiculata
Size: Wingspan approx 50mm.
Distribution: Found throughout the UK.
Months seen: May to September.
Habitat: Fields, gardens, farmland and woodland edges.
Food: The larvae, called 'leatherjackets' develop in soil, feeding on roots.
Special features: Spotted craneflies have a yellow body with a black
strip on each section of the abdomen, and a series of short black stripes on the
thorax. The wings have a very thin yellow line near the leading edge.
