Common Hoverfly
Latin name: Syrphus ribesii
Size: Wingspan up to 24mm
Distribution: Throughout the UK.
Months seen: May to November
Life Span: Approximately 8 months
Habitat: Parks, gardens, woods, hedgerows and meadows.
Food: Nectar, pollen and aphid honeydew. The larvae feed on aphids.
Special features: The Common hoverfly has an unmarked olive green or
grey thorax. The thorax has short orange-brown hair hairs. The abdomen is yellow
with black stripes. The first two long veins in the wings reach the wing
margin.
