Latin name: Salmo trutta
Size: Up to 100cm.
Distribution: Found throughout the U.K.
Months seen: All year round.
Habitat: Streams, rivers and lakes.
Food: Insects - especially flies which land on the waters surface.
Special features: A member of the salmon family - hence the Latin name. The Brown trout has adapted its colour to suit its surroundings and varies from silver to dark brown. The sides often have black and orange spots. The head is scaleless and the mouth extends behind the eye. There is a fleshy fin on the back between the dorsal fin and the tail (adipose fin).
Brown Trout spawn in November and the eggs hatch in March.
