Photo: Sue North

Latin name: Abramis brama

Size: Up to 75cms

Distribution: Found throughout the U.K.

Months seen: All year round

Food: Small water insects

Habitat: Slow-flowing rivers, lakes and reservoirs

Special features: The common bream is bronze scoloured scales and dark fins. The mouth parts look large, and are specially adapted for bottom feeding. The photo above shows the Silver bream, Blicca bjoerkna, which has bigger eyes and smaller mouth. They are generally smaller than the common bream, growing to around 35cms.

Spawning takes place around May when bream can congregate in large shoals close to the river banks.
