Latin name: Actinia equina
Size: Around 70mms tall. The tentacles are approximately 70mms across.
Distribution: Throughout the UK.
Months seen: All year round.
Habitat: Rocky coastlines. They can often be seen on rocks at low tide.
Food: Small fish and shrimps
Special features: The tentacles are capable of delivering a painful sting, which is how it catches its prey. The colour can vary from red to almost brown, and there is a ring of blue spots around the base of the tentacles.
When its 200 tentacles are fully opened it resembles a flower.
