Latin name: Balanus balanoides
Size: They grow to around 15mm across.
Distribution: Found all around the UK coast.
Months seen: All year round.
Habitat: Found clinging to rocks, timbers and other marine creatures at coastal areas.
Food: When barnacles feed, they open the plates at the top of their shells, and stick out their feathery, fan shaped legs. With these they filter the sea water for passing organisms.
Special features: Barnacles are a type of crustacean, like crabs. They can be found all round the coast of Britain, particularly in the north.
The ones shown above are called Common Acorn Barnacles. They can be distinguished from other types of barnacle by the diamond shaped opening at the top of the shell.
